It is a well-known most ancient temple of Varanasi. God KalBhairav is believed to be the “Kotwal of Sati pind”. Without his permission no one can even touch to the Sati pind.
The God is offered liquor. Small and big liquor bottles and other puja items are available outside the temple and devotees buy it and offer to god.
The History comes from Long ago, many great saints went to the Sumeru Mountain in order to know from Lord Brahma that who is eternal and supreme power. Lord Brahma stated that he was the superior person.
Lord Vishnu was not agreed with the decision of the Lord Brahma. Both, Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu went to the four Vedas for the answer of same question.
Rig Veda answered that the Rudra, Yajur Veda answered that Lord Shiva. Sam Veda answered that Triambakam. Atharva Veda answered that Lord Shankar. All the four Vedas declared that Lord Shiva is the supreme.
Both, Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu laughed on the decision of Vedas.
The Lord Shiva came as a powerful divine shine in their center. Lord Brahma was staring very angrily at that shine with his 5th head.
Lord Shiva has instantly created Kaal Bhairav. He said that Kaal Bhairav will forever be in Kashi in order to remove sins of the disciples, that’s why Kaal Bhairav is also known as Paap Bhakshak.
In the meantime, Kaal Bhairav plucked the burning head with anger of Lord Brahma and devotees started praying Lord Shiva.
Lord Shiva said to Kaal Bhairav to go to various places but Brahma Hatya Dosh was following him. Brahma Hatyia created by Lord Shiva was following Kaal Bhairav at every place. Finally, he reached to Kashi. Brahma Hatya has finally vanished as soon as Kaal Bhairav has entered to the Kashi.
The Lord Brahma’s head fell at the ground known as Kapal Mochan and the place famed as the Kapal Mochan Teerth. From that day on wards, Kaal Bhairav stayed at Kashi forever and protects devotees from their problems.
Devotee buying a bottle of wine or hard liquor like rum or whisky and presenting to the deity. The bottle is handed over to the priest along with other puja material. The priest opens the bottle and put half of the contents into a shallow plate which is placed near the mouth of the idol. Slowly, the liqueur level starts going down and the Priest takes back the plate when all the liquor is finished. The contents of the plate disappears in front of your eyes.
In Kal Bhairav Temple, a human being can drink a limited amount of Liquor / Wine in a day but what would you call of a Stone Idol of Indian God, which drinks thousands of bottles of liquor in a single day.
This happens everyday and thousands of years going. No one knows where does these hundreds of bottles of liquor goes. The Temple age is more than years old.
This is one of the most active and happening temple in the Ujjain city. Daily, hundreds of people come over here with faith and reverence to offer Liquor to the God.
The left over in the bottle is given back as prasad to the pilgrims. It is a wonder, where does the alcohol gulped by the lord goes. Probably, this is the only God, to whom alcohol is offered in the temple. The flowers and other pooja items are also offered.
Hundreds of bottles are devoted to the deity in a day on festive seasons. No one knows where does these hundreds of bottles of liquor goes but it has been happening since ages.
It is believed that the worship of the eight Bhairavas is a part of Shaivite tradition worship and the chief among them is Kaal Bhairava. This temple is believed to have been built by King Bhadresen in older times on the banks of the Shipra River.
